Our Reading Goals

Dear Families,

Reading is one of the most important skills your child will develop in 3rd grade, and it is the foundation for success in every subject. To help your child grow into a confident and capable reader, we focus on several key areas: oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Each of these parts works together. Oral language builds strong communication skills, phonics and phonemic awareness give children the tools to decode words, fluency helps them read smoothly and with expression, vocabulary expands their understanding, comprehension allows them to make meaning from what they read, and writing gives them the chance to share their own ideas.

These goals are based on Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards, which outline what students should learn at each grade level. By working on all of these areas, we not only strengthen reading skills but also nurture lifelong learners who can think critically, ask questions, and express themselves clearly. Most importantly, your child’s success is a team effort. When we work together—supporting reading at home and in the classroom—we give students the encouragement and practice they need to grow at their own pace while also challenging them to reach their fullest potential.

Oral Language

Goal: Students will engage in discussions using clear, grade-appropriate language. They'll share ideas, listen actively, ask and answer questions, and build on classmates’ contributions during conversations and collaborative tasks, mirroring Florida’s expectation for academic discourse.

Phonemic Awareness

Goal: Students will confidently isolate, blend, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken language, such as segmenting “/c/–/a/–/t/” into its parts and blending sounds to form words. This skill supports their reading and spelling development.

Phonics

Goal: Students will decode words accurately by applying systematic phonics strategies. They’ll use knowledge of common prefixes and suffixes (For example, –ful, –less, –est), decode multisyllabic words, and recognize irregularly spelled words appropriate for their grade level.

Fluency

Goal: Students will read grade-level texts aloud with accuracy, proper pace, and expression to support comprehension. This is so that reading sounds more like natural speech. This means they can read aloud in a way that is clear and engaging, showing that they understand what they are reading.

Targets we will aim for:

Season Words Correct per Minute

(WCPM) Fall~71

WCPM Winter~92

WCPM Spring~107 WCPM

Vocabulary

Goal: Students will use appropriate academic and domain-specific vocabulary in both speaking and writing. They will learn to choose words for effect, understand word relationships and context clues, and connect vocabulary to real-life experiences.

Comprehension

Goal: Students will understand and analyze texts across genres. They will:

  • Determine the main idea and recount key details

  • Explain character development and perspectives

  • Identify themes, plot points, and summarize texts

  • Recognize text features and use them to enhance understanding

  • Make inferences and support their thinking with textual evidence

Writing

Goal: Students will use writing as a tool to enhance their reading comprehension and communication. They'll produce narrative, opinion, and informative/explanatory pieces using proper grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Writing tasks will integrate vocabulary and text-based evidence, and include elements like cursive letter formation and structured organization.

Together, these reading goals give your child the tools they need to become a confident and successful reader. By focusing on each part—oral language, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing we are building the foundation for strong communication, critical thinking, and a love of learning. With consistent practice at school and support from home, we can help every student grow as a reader and be prepared for success both inside and outside the classroom.
